Student Life

Little Flower students are being grounded in Catholic social teaching through the school’s ongoing call to action, Just Us to Justice. While the program name may be new to the school, the concept of teaching social justice traces its roots to the wisdom of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, who formerly staffed the school. These Franciscan teachers, well known for their emphasis on matters of peace and justice, introduced these concepts years ago. Just Us to Justice renews the commitment to these ideas within Little Flower Catholic School. Themes are posted for all to see, and articles are made part of the parent newsletter. Students are asked to reflect on concepts through classroom dialogue. As students take on projects throughout the year, targeted connections are made to show how these projects are connected to rights and responsibilities directed by Catholic social teaching. The parish patroness, St. Therese of Lisieux, reflected that, “Love is repaid by love alone.” At Little Flower, students are expected to be active participants in many service projects which affect the school, the parish and the broader community and which demonstrate students’ willingness to show love and concern for others. After each project is complete, students are invited to reflect through journaling and classroom discussion about how what they have done relates to their relationship to one another and to the variety of stewardship and social justice issues to which they are being exposed.
