Dear Parent(s),

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you all have a sweet day. This Wednesday afternoon I have another meeting at the Office of Catholic Education. Mrs. Smith will be our substitute. Things will go on like normal without me.

Please be working on your Black History Reports. I would like the book report paper finished by Monday, February 21. They will bring these in on that day so that we may begin writing and practicing speeches for Friday, February 25.

Also a reminder, that I am no longer asking you to provide snack. You may send in a little something each day or each week for your child to snack on during reading time.

Thanks,

Julie Mennel

Writing:

  • We are going to continue working on our writing prompt pictures. The children are going to look at some famous art and choose one to write a story about it.
  • This week we are focusing on editing and revising. We are also adding details and “quotes” to make it more interesting.

Spelling:

  • We will have an assessment sometime next week. Students will be working on these different patterns:
  • Long u (ui, ue, and magic e): Sky, Xavier, Noland
  • Auto (understanding the meaning of the root word): Allie, Chase, Audrey
  • Add ed (drop the e before adding ed, double last consonant if short vowel, just add ed if long vowel or short vowel with 2 consonants): Aidan, Elijah, Grayson, Milly, Courtney
  • Soft c and s (soft c when followed by long I or E sound): River, Marleen, Jackie
  • Able/Ible ending (able with root words, ible with no root word like terrible or horrible): Camille, Josh, Paige, Garrett

Reading:

  • Unit: Social Justice- The life and dignity of people and the rights and responsibilities. We are reading Belle Teal (segregation), Number the Stars (Holocaust), Henry’s Freedom Box (slavery), and Rosa (segregation). We are also reading picture books that deal with equality for all.
  • Skill: Graphic organizer titled Bystander/Ally/Target/Perpetrator. The students will determine where each character falls in the books we are reading. This should make for some interesting discussions.
  • Black History Project: Please work on book reports. We will do the speeches in class.

Math:

  • Unit: Patterns
  • This week we are going to look at patterns of numbers. We will be using number grids, counting by 2, 3, 5 and 10, doubling and halving, as well as looking at complements of 10 (1/9, 2/8, etc.)

Religion:

  • We are doing chapter 3 in our Gold books. These will come home on Friday to share.
