On the Road in Third Grade...

Science

We begin our Dinosaurs and Fossils unit this week in science. After

seeing the dinosaur exhibit at the Children’s Museum way back in

November, many third graders have expressed interest in reading and

learning about dinosaurs.  Of course, we will be making many trips

to our science lab upstairs.  I’m excited to get them wrapped up

in dinosaurs.

       Reading

This week, we are continuing literature circles.  Students have been

doing a great job reading and preparing for discussion independently,

as well as, meeting with their group to discuss and explore their novel

even further.  We are also beginning to make a “Journey Quilt”.

Students will contribute two squares to the quilt,  which demonstrate

the personal journal that one character in their novel endured.

They will write a paragraph showing how this particular character

experienced growth.  Come check out the final product in a few

weeks J

Writing

Workshop

In writing, we have been spending a good deal amount of time using a “Main Idea” wheel to organize and plan our writing.  We also have created a “Wonderful Word Wall” in which we find really interesting words in our reading to add to our wall.  Students get excited when they find a really good one.

Math

After lots of Geometry, we have moved on to more multiplication and division.  Third graders are working very hard on mastery of facts!  I encourage them to practice flash cards every night for our Thursday times tests!

       Spelling/English

I have decided to give a re-test of last weeks spelling words on Friday!  It is very important for students to be practicing (by writing) these words every night.  I do not want them to wait until Thursday or Friday.

Our English focus this week is pronouns.

      Religion

As part of our class Lenten promise, we will be doing daily gospels readings, as well as, corresponding activities.  My hope is that third grade will fully experience and appreciate their Lenten journey.
